They were some of our best characters, mainly because we were just starting to learn how to play, so we didn't exactly power-game.
Non-power-gamed characters have to have a sort of...sentimental value to hold that appeal because they may not be the best at what they do, but by golly, those characters are characters.
Not sure if that made any sense, but Rob was, and is, still my favorite character despite Krysta being a MUCH better healer.
I chalk most of that up to everything we encountered being completely fresh and new. We didn't know how to handle it, making it more of a fun challenge.
Example: the Cockatrices from the Reliquary campaign. We meta-gamed because we knew what powers they had. If that had happened in our 3.0 campaign, I'm sure we would have investigated.
Good times. Good characters.

Dude. I wrote the song out...well, most of it anyway...
I made like... four verses and a refrain. It's in my D&D folder.
I can also play the melody that goes with it.
And by "drinking contests" you most surely mean "excessive tavern-hopping while Rob amused himself in other ways", right?
Again, goooooood times.

Why is the omnipotent, (assumed) heavenly being using the word "hell"?

Yes that was a joke and I am aware that was the DM.
